March 2020 Chapter Meeting

Estimation Comparison - Waterfall Versus SAFe Agile

Estimation Comparison - Waterfall Versus SAFe Agile

Amber will be discussing the contrast between estimation of work in a Waterfall project versus Agile backlogs. There are some fundamental differences, however there are many concepts which she believes hold true in both contexts. Having "grown up" in a Waterfall world, and led the transition of teams to Agile in the last few years, she has a unique perspective on how people figure out how long "things should take".

Bio:
Amber Pollastrini is the Release Train Engineer for the FBI National Crime Information Center. She has 17 years of experience in supporting projects within PMOs, with an emphasis on strategic planning and project scheduling.  Notably, she spent seven years as the Senior Scheduler for the FBI's Next Generation Identification project, which produced the world's largest electronic repository of biometric and criminal history information. This multi-billion dollar project gave Amber a wide perspective on the merits and deficiencies of software development using the Waterfall method. In 2015, she became a certified Scrum Master, which changed the trajectory of her career. Amber felt certain that Agile was superior to Waterfall for the FBI's application of software development, and has spent the last five years advocating the adoption of a lean-agile mindset in the Federal workspace.  As a SAFe Program Consultant (SPC), Amber teaches classes and facilitates workshops for the Criminal Justice Information Services Division. She and her husband, Allen, have a nine-year old daughter. At the tender age of nine,  Ms. Annie has developed into quite the non-conformist, and she continually challenges her mother to think "outside the box".  (Thus embracing Agile principles are proving to be useful both at work and at home.)
