Designing Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence: A UX Framework

Artificial intelligence (AI) holds great promise to empower us with knowledge and scaled effectiveness. To harness the power of AI systems, we can -- and must -- ensure that we keep humans safe and in control. This session will introduce a new user experience (UX) framework to guide the creation of AI systems that are accountable, de-risked, respectful, secure, honest and usable.

Carol Smith has been conducting user experience (UX) research to improve the human experience across industries for 19 years and working to improve AI systems since 2015. She is a Senior Research Scientist in Human-Machine Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute and an adjunct instructor for Carnegie Mellon University's Human Centered Interaction Institute. Carol holds an MS in human-computer interaction from DePaul University.
